HAWAI’I TRADITIONAL TATTOO FESTIVAL!

Hawai’i’s First Traditional Tattoo Festival (October 25-28, 2019) celebrates the ritualistic and ceremonial practice of traditional tattooing from Pacific Rim and Arctic cultures.  Featured artists include Keone Nunes (Hawai’i), Cudjuy (Taiwan), Dion Kaszas (Canada), Holly Nordlum (Alaska), Julia Mage’au Gray (Mekeo), Sarah Whalen Lunn (Alaska), and Lane Wilcken (Nevada).

The Kohala Institute on the Big Island of Hawai’i hosts four days of events, including a two-day conference. I have curated a fantastic tattoo film series, which includes episodes of SKINDIGENOUS, TUNNIIT: Retracing the Lines of Inuit Tattoo by Alethea Arnaquq-Baril (Nunavut), TEP TOK: Reading between Our Lines by Julia Mage’au Gray (New Zealand) & Nata Richards (Australia), TATAU: La culture d’un art by Jean-Philippe Joaquim (French Polynesia), THE PINTADOS PROJECT by Heather Fassio (USA), and other offerings. Most of these exquisite programs and films have not been screened in Hawai’i! (*other titles are forthcoming…)

Hope to see you there for amazing artist demonstrations, panels and public discussions, food and entertainment, and much more!
